This is a fantastically well written review. John Dupre’s perspective shines through here and this review led me to think about the complexity of biology in a new way, while inspiring me to attempt to write more eloquently.


The reviewer seems to really have it out for Dawkins, but I didn’t really find their criticisms valid. When he started talking about multilevel selection I thought “oh well that explains it.”

He acts like Dawkins is just being pinheaded but my impression is that multilevel selection is still very far from being widely accepted. Indeed, my impression is that Dawkins’ views on multilevel selection are pretty mainstream within science. Am I wrong? I’m not an academic so I’m open that maybe things have changed recently.
