The other lesson I took from the whole anthrax-investigation episode, is that you cannot trust experts' opinion on matters which are politically or economically important to them; at least not nearly to the same degree that you could safely trust experts' opinions on matters in which they have no stake. Experts, however great their expertise, are still humans. As Upton Sinclair supposedly said: βIt is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.β
