I think it would be more useful if there were more ways to sort and organize the content. Right now there's only "Front Page" (I assume that's what's hot), and "Newest". I'd like to see "Best of all time" (maybe other time periods), and some categories for Useful, Innovative, Fiction, Unexpected, and others... Maybe as tags, but have links to a few of those broad category tags on the front page.
Adding these features will help keep promote diverse usage, instead of cute memes devouring everything.
