Does anyone else have issues wrapping their head around the UI and configuration of VSCode? Or is this a symptom of my losing touch with how IDEs work vs. my old habit of solo coding in Vim and running scripts?

Everything is monocolored, everything feels like it's an add-on, and settings are in weird different places rendered as json or a web page feel.

Last time I used a "real" IDE was 2008, so I may be the problem here.

You can change the layout and theme so it makes sense for you. There are buttons in the title bar and you can drag panels around at will

In a word, no.

Did cryptography or Toy story 3D animation make every human need to question the reality of any electronic audio or video they encounter, no matter how realistic?

Did cryptography make me have to train my parents not to trust my own voice if I make strange asks like money?

There is a lot more to do for each other as a society to adjust to the new normal of AI, than just complain. Awareness and realignment are critical.

>cryptography

cryptography enables spies, terrorists, criminals, and dissidents to communicate over any network with absolute impunity. if it was feasible, every government in the world would have banned or "regulated" it, as some had attempted to. but in the end, they had conceded defeat, and the world had not ended.

>make every human need to question the reality of any electronic audio or video they encounter, no matter how realistic?

you left out "images", which we learned to question decades ago. likewise, audio and video could also be manipulated with readily available, completely unregulated tools, to produce quite believable results.

I disagree with your final assertion. Completely or nearly-completely undetectable reproductions of reality, and specific human voices with intonation and generative vocabulary, have not been widely available before now to anyone with the will.

I think "learning that absolutely nothing you see with your own eyes can be trusted as reality despite looking completely real" is a valid problem and that we are all somewhat vulnerable there.

I'll chime in with the others to say that "amateur" users still notice, even if my dad isn't calling me to say "Son, why does this new MacOS version have different icons for the `New` action across apps?"

I had to help him "get his bookmarks back" meaning see his bookmarks toolbar in Firefox. He must have hit a keyboard combo on accident. Since Firefox hides the menus by default, I had to tell him to tap Alt to see the menu, after which he was easily guided to View > Toolbars > Bookmarks Toolbar.

Bad UI design for novices is felt, if not conveyed outright.

There is far less of a psychological component to tobacco than alcohol.

Like someone else said, alcohol is far more in your face each day than other drugs.

Let me strap on my vocabulary filter for this site and say very diplomatically that what you typed is completely, entirely incorrect, a caricature, and is not relevant.

That account's history is... Erratic.

>I don't want any of my devices listening on the public address, much less multiple.

That is good for you, but given the option between an address scheme that requires a proxy and one that does not, I would prefer the latter.

>I can have a both a firewall and a NAT. The two layers are better than one because at least my address is shouldn't be routable even if I failed to configure my firewall correctly.

Why? NAT is a network tool. Firewall is a security control.

I don't think HN leans MAGA. However, I think there are a nonzero number of people on this site which hold MAGA views, which can feel like too many for a site that respects facts and intellectual richness.

As a liberal in a blue gerrymandered district within a red state, I literally can only hope that the pain and destruction and illegal behaviors of this administration impact my friends who voted for Trump, so that their lack of empathy/attention to world events gets adjusted enough to sit out 2026/2028 or ideally to vote otherwise. - edit to be clear: Damage is being done to all of us; my point is not malice or Schaudenfreude but hope that something can open his supporters' eyes.

The sheer amount of illegal and quid-pro-quo behavior from the president and the justice department can only be described as a coup against our own Constitution and legislature.

Ngl I have a bit of malice towards em
