The real solution is pricing the true cost of the externalities fairly and globally.

Everything which isn't sustainable must he taxed to the degree to offset the damage. We know well that economic incentives work best and that markets are efficient to achieve optimal solutions.

The core issue is just game theory to coordinate globally all players to prevent free riding.

You have to coerce the individual to follow the strategic direction despite tactical disadvantages. This is what leadership means.

If we all individually spend more money to accommodate the effects of climate change than their causes, then we are wasting enormous economic resources.

Sure, but local is a radius. There's my local, then there's my region's local, then there's my country's local. As wonderful as globalism sounds on paper, if saving the global average leads to a drought or a flood for another country, or another region, then you are trying to convince others of giving up a lot for no tangible relevant gain.

Correlation vs causation?

Not sure how you could run an A/B test on the planet, really.

The best way to think about it is that std::move is a cast.

The article explains this.

The prevalence question isn't really answered in the article. If it is 500 cases in an area in which 1m people live then it might not really be a cluster. But if it is 500 cases out of a town of 40000 then it is quite something different.

The entire province only has a population of 800-900k

This research was from northern Germany and I am wondering if it is something which has gotten as far as Berlin because we used to have a bat population across from our house due to a location near a park and cemetery. Since last summer the bats seem gone (and mosquito population much on the rise).

I am surprised that nobody seems to have the opposite problem: Modern Android just no longer delivers notifications in realtime but bunches them and delays them to a degree that you can't rely on them anymore for synchronous communication. Whatsapp and Gmail messages often trigger notifications up to 15 minutes after being received for me. Infuriating.

With apps like Signal, installed via apk, without going through Google on a de-Googled phone, I receive notifications in real time. What's the point of having all notifications go through Google, except to save some battery life and data?

Also, can Google read push notifications going through FCM?

Another plausible explanation is that the new owners didn’t develop the community in a good way. Instead of fixing the myriad of issues that were obvious to almost all contributors they instead basically let it die?

The new owners (well, not really new any more) are focused on adding AI to SO because it's the current hotness, and making other changes to try to extract more money that they're completely ignoring the community's issues and objections to their changes, which tend to be half-assed and full of bugs.

Love this comment [1] under the post

> $1.8 billion? So do those of us who contribute get any of that?

If I understand it right, then OP likely believes that Germany has a draconian regime when it comes to freedom of speech (which is objectively just ridiculous give or take some German nuances).

OP thus wants to make fun of those (such as me) who are puzzled by a statement that Germany could be considered a draconian state with regards to freedom of speech. It is hard to engage OP because he likely isn't German and has no personal knowledge and experience at all if any of his speech would be censored in Germany. Calling OP disinformed maybe isn't quite correct, maybe misinformed would fit better.
