The advertised battery life appeals to me, if it does indeed work as advertised. I have a 3-year-old Oryx Pro, which I probably over-indexed on performance on. Everything about it is great with the exception of the battery life which is usually < 1 hour (surfing the net or programming, nothing crazy). I would have gone with a different offering if I had known this.
That's what I've been reading about those a lot. I think they took the feedback seriously and packed this thing with a real whopper of a battery. I'm pretty excited by this development.
Probably being wildly naive here, but wouldn't it be better if there were an open-source solution for this sort of thing that could be used by both parties?
Every state has a very different process. Even within the same state, Iowa Dems and Republicans have a different process. The work this company did in Nevada for their caucus (which now reportedly will not be used, for obvious reasons) had to be a different solution than the one for Iowa. But yeah, somebody could probably build an open source solution that has the calculator and other functions.
I think they'll likely go back to just transmitting via phone, though.
I don't want to live in the Bay Area, I find almost nothing I like about it--with one exception: 2-5x what you are going to make in most other cities for work that is often easier.
Almost any city in the Northeast and large parts of the Midwest have better transportation and housing.
Somewhat related: The Youtube algorithm also recently lead me to this Japanese musician I wasn't familiar with:
(Ryo Fukui - A letter from slowboat)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVV_z1lBNLo
Ryo Fukui has been very popular for a long time with the /mu/ sort of crowd. There's a group of artists (ryo fukui, animal collective, neutral milk hotel, the antlers, mount eerie, destroyer, the avalanches, gsybe, etc) which are basically a clique in the music recommendations graph. Although they aren't very close to each other genre wise, they are safe bets as a recommendation for anyone who listens to any music in the /mu/core 'genre'.
Yeah I came on to leave a comment about Ryo Fukui. He unexpectedly popped up in my feed a few years ago. I have no idea why they suggested it, but I enjoyed him. (Jazz trio). When I read the comments everyone was saying, “dunno why I landed here but this is good”.
Have had similar things with topics like billiards, lock picking lawyers, and now ex-convicts. (Shout out to OG Badger and Wes Watson — CHICKEN ON THE BONE)
It goes even deeper - the Youtube algorithm recommending the likes of Ryu Fukui, Taeko Ohnuki and others has led online music aficionados, who knew about these artists before their decades old music gained renewed popularity with millions of views, to term them "YouTube-core". For example, I had a physical copy of one of Ryo Fukui's album around 2014, before it took off (or perhaps even before it was uploaded) on YouTube. The music is, of course, excellent, but it's funny how these things come around.
I hope Stripe and similar companies that are mostly SF-based plan on more expansion to San Jose. There is an article practically every day in the Mercury News about some new office or residential site that is coming soon.
They can't move their HQ at this point for reasons others have mentioned.
It does seem like they are taking a balanced strategy, however. I remember a story a few months ago about how their latest team is all-remote. They might have better incentives to open more offices in lower-cost locales after going public (see Uber's new Dallas plans for example).
For me, it's the somewhat selfish but defensible idea that open source is a good way to get experience with technologies that I don't get to use in my day job. I get some amount of pride in seeing my name in release notes etc but that is about it, I don't do Twitter, don't have followers, and am not high-profile in any way.
I realize a university is not going to pay in-line with a FAANG company, but I am surprised somewhere like Columbia which is definitely not hurting for money doesn't pay at least a little bit more than this, like 110-130.
