I used the app when it was first launched and as the post suggests, whilst it was an interesting way to find new movies, that focus alone wasn't enough to get me engaged as the days went on. I just ended up selecting the movies I was gonna watch depending on their streaming availability on other platforms. Nowadays however, with the way they pivoted towards focusing on how a person felt about the movie they watched, it became an entirely different experience that I couldn't find on other places. Im genuinely interested in seeing how my friends reacted to a movie, more than just knowing whether they deemed it was a 4 star movie. When I see that they were shocked by a movie or utterly bored, it sways my movie selecting experience towards this new logic which I find very appealing. To founders of other startups, I would suggest that the moral of the story is to "listen" to your users and be ready to shift the focus or logic of your product towards something unexpected that might have seemed secondary at first.

Well, there are some people, like myself, who are interested in seeing ads. The reasons vary. For example, im on the lookout for an upgrade to a vps. Im getting lots of targeted ads with offers and specs. I consider that a good thing. I also like to know when my friend's startups are advertising and how they are doing it. Not everyone dislikes ads enough to go through the technicalities of installing an ad blocker.

Apparently all of the carbyne related domains where available and then registered by someone soon after this was posted.

Squatters confuse and irritate me.

They already answered on these comments with regards to their already functioning revenue model. Banks pay them for securing their sites. They're a YC startup. You're on HN and you're afraid of trying out new technologies because they're offered by new startups?

No. I'm not afraid at all. Indeed I have accounts with most of the projects that are being shown off here. Some paid, some just trials. Some I still use, some I don't. However, I'm very cautious with entrusting my phone number or authentication related applications to a startup.

That's all I said. I'm not saying nobody should trust them. I'm not saying they aren't trustworthy in general.

I just said that I don't trust them with my phone number (or gmail HOTP secret for that matter).

Especially in matters of authentication services that require more private information than what's strictly needed leave a bad taste in my mouth.

"Religion is the opium of the people". Clearly, when one develops a product that rubs people the right way and inundates them with the right dopamine levels, one has achieved a product whose level of flexibility towards pricing, re-use and viralization is given.

I think the quote is much more interesting when the rest of the phrase is added : "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

Arguably, opium is the religion of many people nowadays.

Interesting. There's one bug though, when you select another country like Colombia, for instance, you have to enter the value in its currency. When you do, in that case 1k usd is 2 Million, the calculation seems to convert that to millions of dollars. Its not entirely clear which money format you should use.

It would be great if profiles could be searchable through the three hashtags one can use on the profile. That way one would not necessarily only rely on sending an email, but would always be available to the pool of hiremyfriend users who are looking for growth hackers or ruby devs, etc.

That's a really great idea, thanks :)

This has been a crazy rush to get the product launched as-is (and there's a whole bunch of hypotheses we want to validate right now anyway), but working more on the employer side is definitely something that we're excited to explore in the very near future :)

Is that 90's design style on purpose? That way you can attract older users?

http://carros.com.co - Its becoming the biggest used car portal in Colombia.

Indeed, the times I've worked for someone else, I've never had to show my resume. I find it more important to highlight very specific milestones I have accomplished and by doing so, the employer has a good idea of what he can attain from me by hiring me.
