No, it's a thing everywhere to be honest. People are their with their friends and you are the only one alone.
Without phone it would be too cringe, even with phone its cringe. I behave as if though I'm texting someone. It's the societal weight of being the one who is alone.
If I want to see a movie, I see a movie. If I want to travel, I travel.
Now with my last vacation I happened to be on the same continent as a long term friend who I hadn't seen in very long time. We met up, and it was like we were hanging out in college again.
But I had a great time traveling solo before that.
If you have the mentality that you need to be around your friends constantly you'll never try anything new.
other people there have no way of knowing what your situation is. maybe you were with your friends just before they came in, or maybe youre meeting someone but theyre running late. most arent even going to be paying that much attention that they would notice, and even if they do theyre going to forget about you a second later because they have theyre own things to be worrying about
Transit is different, you are going from one place to another. Cafes are where people that know each other come to socialize. You will almost never see a lone person in a cafe in the country where I live in, and a lively conversation tends to pull other people in as well.
It's just different so their initial thought of it being awkward without further reflection is based on reality not some blown up fear.
I also say this as someone that has no trouble striking up conversations with strangers. So not like I barely go out.
Of course all the headlines say Trump did this and that but the person behind this is Secretary of State (foreign minister for the tourists.) Marco Rubio. He will be low key about this right now because of Trumps ego but it will all come out later.
Rubios reasons are:
1. He is a Cuban American and his base is the Cuban exile community. They have been wanting to overthrow the Communist regime since JFK. As Cuba is utterly dependent on Venezuelan oil, this might be what finally does it.
2. He is setting himself to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. Despite the isolationist tendencies of MAGA, there are still many Republican voters for whom kicking foreign commie ass is an impressive resume item.
3. Maduro is really horrible. All the “No Kings” types wringing their hands about Fascism should be happy that an actual authoritarian dictator has met his end.
This really should be way this problem is approached. There have been people who have committed suicide because their private data was leaked. It's an altogether serious matter.
Cyber attacks have gotten pretty sophisticated. Lately supply chain attacks are all over HN, I got hacked through a Web3 interview. I managed to get the site down after complaining to their hosting provider.
November 1st I received an email that I had been hacked and all private data including a video of me was owned. I got really emotional but then after reading it, I saw it was a generic threat and nothing could be done.
You are asking, what can be done? Start with the basics, strong password and MFA everywhere. Avoided pirated Windows, and if you can avoid the OS entirely as well. Basic cybersecurity awareness need to be taught in schools. After 23andme, a lot of companies just have very shitty practices as well.
